He was a corporal in the US Army and became a Military Police Officer during the Korean conflict. He enjoyed telling stories about playing horseshoes when he was in the Army. After the service, Dewayne married Evyleen Maxwell on July 19, 1955. Dewayne and Evyleen had two daughters, Dana Grace and Marilyn. They also had a son Ed Lemmings and adopted son, Terry.
