Samuel Chapman Armstrong’s father died when Samuel was 21 and the young man left his home in Hawaii for Williams College in Massachusetts. The year was 1860 and Armstrong graduated in 1862 in the chaotic turmoil of the Civil War. He volunteered to serve in the Union Army and recruited a company of infantry in Troy, New York. He was commissioned a captain, but brutal combat service saw him rise to Lieutenant Colonel, when he was assigned to command the 8 th United States Colored Troops, a regiment recruited from former slaves. They fought and served valiantly until October 1865 when now-General Armstrong and his men were discharged from the Army.
