Hiking is a popular and accessible outdoor activity. According to the American Hiking Society, since the National Trail System was established under President Lyndon Johnson in 1965, the mileage of trails on federal lands has increased almost three-fold, from 88,000 to more than 193,000 in 2015. During that same time period, mileage of trails on state lands has increased from 15,000 to 42,500. And all those trails aren’t going to waste, as the Outdoor Industry Association notes that more than 34 million people went hiking in 2013. Hiking is a great way to enjoy the great outdoors, but veteran and novice hikers must emphasize safety when traversing the trails.
