Dorothy Mae Lowe

Chaney Dorothy Mae Lowe, known to most as Dot, was born March 16th, 1926, in Clarksdale, Mississippi, and passed away on Good Friday, March 29th, 2024, in Tulsa, OK. She embraced the Christian faith at a young age, joyfully recounting the story of being baptized in a river at the age of 7. Growing up, she rode a horse named Nellie to school. She achieved perfect attendance, which she was very proud of.

Dot moved to Memphis, TN at the age of 17, where she worked at a car dealership. She met Bill Rider, a sailor in the Navy, at a roller-skating rink, and they were married in Memphis. Their daughter Annette was born, and in 1954 the family moved to Wewoka, OK where Dot lived the rest of her long life. She became a member of the First United Methodist Church in her new hometown and was active in church events. She was a Campfire leader and worked as a secretary at First National Bank in Wewoka. Dot had beautiful red hair, along with a Mississippi accent that never faded.

Dot and A.B. Chaney were married in 1974 and celebrated their 40th anniversary shortly before his death in 2014. They enjoyed traveling the U.S. in an RV, dancing, watching Westerns, and hosting family and friends at their home. After she retired, Dot helped raise grandchildren Anna and Lauren while their parents were working, until they were old enough to go to school. She had an affinity for picking antiques and vintage treasures, and in 1996, she and Annette opened Willow Creek Antiques in downtown Wewoka. Over the years, she bought and sold many items, but to her, the biggest reward of having an antique shop was getting to chat with visitors, both locals and out-oftowners. Any stranger was soon a friend. Her outgoing and inquisitive nature led to her having countless great friends over the years. Dot was devoted to Wewoka, and was a champion for its success. She volunteered for community events and attended them often. She was proud to be a co-founder of Lakefest and worked on fundraising campaigns including Light Up Wewoka.

Throughout her life, Dot’s greatest happiness was gardening, and she worked hard to beautify her home with various trees, shrubs, and flowers. Visiting garden centers to pick out plants brought her so much joy! She knew the name of every plant. Dot leaves behind a lovely garden at her home on Wewoka Lake.

Dot is preceded in death by her parents, James Albert and Lillie Clay Lowe, brothers Duell Lowe, Deveer Lowe, Doyle Lowe and Dill Lowe, and sister Audra Williamson, stepdaughter Debbie Chaney, and husband A.B. Chaney.

Surviving are daughter Annette Mantooth, stepson Randy Chaney and wife Shelly, grandchildren Anna Mantooth and partner Jon White, Lauren Mantooth and partner Austin Thomas, step-grandchildren Devin Rodriquez and husband Gilbert; Dana Brown and husband Craig, and Bryce Chaney. She also leaves behind seven nieces and nephews, children of her sister Audra, who were her beloved Mississippi family.

Funeral service will be held at 2:00 P.M., Friday, April 5, 2024 at Stout-Phillips Funeral Chapel in Wewoka, OK with Fred Rider officiating. Internment to follow at Oakwood Cemetery in Wewoka, OK.

Pallbearers are Randy Chaney, James Wells, Fred Rider, Richard Ellwanger, Jon White, and Austin Thomas.
