Evelyn King
Evelyn Washington King was born on June 7, 1936 in Wewoka, Oklahoma. She was the daughter of Mozelle Ross Robinson. She was reared by her uncle Virgil Washington. She joined the St. Joseph Baptist Church at the age of nine and was a faithful diligent worker for seventy eight years. Providing guidance and counseling to everyone in church and community. Evelyn received her formal education at Douglass High School where she graduated top of her class in 1954. She was homecoming queen.
She was known to substitute teach classes when teachers were absent.
In 1954 Evelyn met Johnnie W. King and a 40 year union was born. He preceded her in death. Evelyn was a loving, faithful, caring, homemaker for the next 15 years. Then she started work at Big Yank Corporation as a seamstress and over the course of 5 years worked her way up to plant supervisor. A title she would hold until its closing. With her exit package from Big Yank came an opportunity she didn’t have in high school, money for college. She enrolled in Seminole Junior College and graduated with Honors.
Evelyn was a very civic minded person. She excelled in problem solving and worked diligently for the West Side Community. Thus a career of over 20 years as a council woman for ward 2 in Wewoka began. She loved her Wewoka family and mentored the young and educated the old. She was not a judgmental person. But she believed people should be judged and held responsible for their actions. From this came the decision to become the first black female mayor of Wewoka. Where she was relentless in getting business back into Wewoka to stimulate the economy. Over the course of her terms she did that being instrumental in bringing Walmart, Hotel, steakhouse, and TEMCO to Wewoka before she stepped down as Mayor.
Evelyn was preceded in death by her mother, husband, and son Maurice.
