Richard Harjo

Richard Harjo, Maud resident, passed away on Thursday, March 10, 2022, in Seminole, at the age of 77. Richard was born on September 11, 1944, in Claremore, OK to Elmer and Lucy (Bruner) Harjo. He had a Master of Education degree and dedicated his career to teaching. Richard also served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War.

Richard is survived by his son, Shawn Harjo of Maud; two grandchildren, Saylee Hill and Ariana Hill-Harjo as well as other family and friends.

Richard was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Edith Harjo Tapaha and daughter, Yahnah Lucia Harjo.

Casket bearers will be Russell Roberts, Aaron Coker, Ty Tapaha, AJ Martinez, Phillip Johnson and Harry Crenshaw. Honorary casket bearers are Frank Sewell, Harry Douglas, Joe Bear and Benny Sewell.

Funeral services were held on Monday, March 14, 2022 at 1:00 p.m. at Achena Presbyterian Church in Maud, Oklahoma, with Elder Farrel Smith officiating. Burial will follow at Harjo Family Cemetery. Services were under the direction of Swearingen Funeral Home in Seminole, Oklahoma.
