Family and friends came together at the Wewoka church of Christ on Tuesday, September 26, 2023, to commemorate the life of Sharyn Kay (Streater) Garner from Wewoka, OK, who peacefully passed away, surrounded by her beloved family on Thursday, September 21, 2023.

Sharyn was born on April 22, 1947, in Wewoka, OK to Frank and Maureen (Ott) Streater. She entered into wedlock with Art Garner on June 7, 1969, in Wewoka, OK, and this year marked their 54th wedding anniversary.

Sharyn was a proud graduate of Wewoka High School in 1965 and went on to further her education at Central State College (UCO), where she earned a Bachelor of Science in Family and Consumer Science in 1971. During her time at UCO, she participated in a work-study program within the Funeral Service Division.

Throughout her career, Sharyn wore various hats, owning and operating Sharyn’s Flowers, Gifts, and Catering. She later served as a Deputy Clerk for the Seminole County Treasurer’s Office. Sharyn was deeply involved in her community, catering events both locally and statewide. Her weddings and receptions were renowned. She co-founded the Wewoka Cookie Club, which thrived for 25 years, and was a member of the Carnation Garden Club and the Arts and Crafts Club. Two special events in her life were the Enchanted Evening and the Museum Holiday Bazaar.

Sharyn is preceded in death by her parents and her brother-in-law, Dan Dearing.

Survivors include her husband, Art Garner, at their home. Sharyn’s legacy continues through her children: Kristi Malinga of Oklahoma City, OK; Kyle (Heather) Garner of Northlake, TX; and Kerri (Chase) Houghton of Wewoka, OK. She is also survived by her grandchildren: Jaxon, Jace, and Ellison Garner of Northlake, TX, and Piper, Dallas, and Dru Houghton of Wewoka, OK. In addition to her grandchildren, Sharyn is also survived by a cherished granddaughter, Michelle Jansson, residing in Sweden.

Other survivors include her sister, Linda Dearing, of Seminole, OK. Sisterin- law, Charla Garner of Holdenville, OK, and brother- in-law, Jerry (Jeanne) Garner of Amarillo, TX.

Her nieces and nephews include: Logan (Troy) and Blake Curtis of Norman, OK, and Lincoln (Kali) and Declan Dearing of Shawnee, OK; Jaci (Darren), Jade, and Jaxon Davis of Amarillo, TX, and Justin Garner of Amarillo, TX.

Sharyn leaves behind numerous cherished friends and cousins to honor her memory. Her passing occurred precisely ten years after her mother’s, on September 21, 2013.

The pallbearers at the service will be six of her cherished grandchildren and Patrick Scribner. Additionally, serving as honorary pallbearers will be Roy Sisco, Marcus Crockett, Steve Bryant and Doyle Motley.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests making memorial donations in honor of Sharyn’s remarkable life to the Sharyn and Art Garner Scholarship fund at Wewoka High School, address: Wewoka High School, PO Box 870, Wewoka, OK 74868, Attention: Art and Sharyn Garner Scholarship. Additionally, contributions can be made to the Seminole Nation Museum at 524 S. Wewoka Ave., Wewoka, OK 74868.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, September 26, 2023, at 2 p.m. at the Wewoka church of Christ, officiated by Aaron Alsbrook and Richard Yahola. Sharyn will be laid to rest at Oakwood Cemetery, located south of Wewoka.
