He was born in Parsons Kansas, October 22, 1933 to Thomas Raymond Roche and Myrtle Cora (Carper) Roche.
His father was a machinist for the Katy Railroad and his mother owned a local cafe. He was the second youngest of 8 children (6 brothers and 2 sisters). Theirs was a traditional large Catholic family.
Growing up in Parsons, Jim attended and graduated from St. Patrick’s school. During this time he excelled at the sports of baseball and football. After graduation, he attended Fort Hayes State College where he played football.

After leaving the Air Force he became a courier for the Atomic Energy Commission where he transported sensitive cargo. One time he and his colleagues had local law enforcement called on them when a gas station owner mistook them for the mob due to their dark suits, dark cars, and shoulder holsters. He eventually went to work for Atlantic Richfield Oil Company (early 70s); this brought him to Garber, OK., and shortly thereafter to Seminole, OK. He remained in Seminole for the rest of his life.
