Betty Joann “Chutt” (Larney) Gibson formerly of Xenia, OH departed peacefully in Valparaiso, IN. She was born on July 9, 1933 in Seminole, OK to Elmer and Rachel (Haney) Larney. She is preceded in death by her husband Robert Gibson of Kansas; parents Elmer and Rachel Larney; brother William Elliott Larney and two sisters baby Tena Louise Larney and Lorene Sue (Larney) Tiger. She is survived by two sons Matthew and wife Britta Gibson, Valparaiso, IN; Mark Gibson, Xenia, OH; and seven grandchildren, Shannon Gibson, Micco Gibson, Trevor Cochran, Zach Estepp, ; Samantha Gibson (including Samantha’s mother Terri Gibson), Charles Gibson and Graham Gibson; and great-granddaughter Sage Tanner. She had an unwavering love for her family.

Chutt/Betty was very close to her sister Lorene, her niece Tena Larney, her aunt and uncle Barbara and Jerry Haney, cousins Greta Ruminer, Kelly Haney, and Terry Spencer. She often asked about other relatives Elsie Spencer, Mary Ann Emarthla, Rosetta Pebworth, and Annie Harjo among a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins.

After graduating from Strother School, Chutt/Betty attended and graduated from Draughn’s Business School in Oklahoma City, OK and began working as a Clerk Stenographer at Tinker Air Force Base in Midwest City, OK, where she met her husband Robert. He was promoted and transferred to Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Fairborn, OH and established permanent residency in Xenia, OH. After a few years at home taking care of her family, she returned to the work force as Secretary for the Defense Electronics Supply Center (DESC) in Kettering, OH. During her retirement she moved to Valparaiso, IN in 2021 to be close to her son Matthew and his family.

Chutt/Betty grew up in the Strother Community, Seminole, OK. When she was enrolled at Strother School, she often spoke of having difficult time transitioning from a household where only her traditional native language was spoken to being forced to speak only English at school.

Chutt/Betty first attended and became a member of her parents church Seminole Hitchitee United Methodist Church outside Seminole, OK. While living in Xenia, she later became a member first of the Evangelical United Methodist Church in Xenia before later becoming a member of Hope United Methodist Church in Sugar Creek Township, OH. Chutt/Betty volunteered and looked forward to meeting with a group of members who prepared the Sunday programs. She enjoyed the fellowship and found satisfaction to serve the Lord in this capacity.

For a short time in her early mid 20’s, Chutt/Betty learned to shake turtle shells and attended and participated at Seminole and Creek ceremonial grounds. She was an avid reader of Jane Austen and mysteries. She enjoyed watching the British shows including “Upstairs, Downstairs’, Downton Abbey and ‘Doc Martin’. By kept sharp by doing crossword puzzles and cryptography puzzles. She learned and often played the piano at home and at Seminole Hitchitee United Methodist Church. She followed golf and more specifically Tiger Woods frequently talking on the phone with her sister Lorene during PGA tournaments.

Chutt/Betty and family often visited her parents and relatives in Seminole, OK each summer and always looked forward to family reunions. After the passing of her husband, she continued kdriving the distance alone as she always sought enjoyment being at the family gatherings.

Cremation arrangements were handled by Geisen-Carlisle Funeral Home, Michigan City, IN. Graveside services to be announced later this summer and will be held at Seminole Hitchitee United Methodist Church, Seminole, OK.
