Read moreLast week, Ms. Hazel’s Art 2 class learned about Viking era artwork. The focus of the project was Viking era ships and swords. Students created their own versions of viking swords and ships as parts of the assignment. Students enhanced their model swords and ships with custom crests and designs, just as vikings did. Then they put their model ships up to the test with a race or, if they made swords, they competed in a sword throwing contest and threw their swords at the wall. The prize of the event was a free pass for the class's virtual day. Out of the 13 students competing, the prize was won by Rio Overbey, Savannah King, and Roxy Lofton.

To commemorate, a ribbon-cutting ceremony was held at 10 a.m. on Sept. 16. Steve Mason, chairman of the State Capitol Restoration Expenditure Oversight Committee, introduced the ceremony while state leaders Rep. Mark McBride and Sen. Roger Thompson, both members of the State Capitol Restoration Oversight Committee, shared remarks. Also speaking were Fred Schmidt, FSB principal, and Craig Abbott, Manhattan Construction vice president, followed by Governor Kevin Stitt with the keynote address.
