Read moreFriday, September 18, 2020 started as a day of relieved burdens and normality. California, Oregon, and Washington all received rain, which temporarily cleared the smoke that has plagued their skies for weeks. Rosh Hashanah began that evening, marking the lead-up to Yom Kippur, both important holidays for our friends and neighbors of Jewish heritage and faith. However, the singular event that will make September 18th a date forever burned into our minds is the loss of Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg.
Read moreIn July of 2020, the United States Supreme Court declared most of eastern Oklahoma to be Indian land. This ruling happened decades after the forceful removal of Native Americans from their homes to Oklahoma, breaking many treaties the United States had made with individual tribes. Most Indigenous peoples and Native Americans are opposed to Columbus Day, and propose that it should, instead, be called Indigenous People’s Day. Columbus Day should not be celebrated because Indigenous people continue to be impacted by white colonization, and it celebrates a non-American who is responsible for Indigenous genocide and slavery.
Read moreMy name is Lilea King, and I’m going to share with you a little bit about what it’s like to be a senior during a global pandemic. Let’s be real everyone dreams of their Senior year, the year you finally get to be the big dogs, and you are not a little pup anymore. You are that much closer to being grown up and starting a new chapter in life. If you are like me, of course you’ve gone to the same school all 4 years you know how everything is supposed to be. Now it’s like a totally different place and atmosphere. Imagine being a senior and your very best friend is a distance learner. It is a very unfortunate situation, but like anything in life, it’s what you make it to be. So I try to remind myself that, and I make the best of everything by trying to be the best leader and set a positive tone for the underclassmen. It is my last year at Seminole High School and I have no choice so I cheer at every football game like it could be my last. Honestly, it could all come to a screeching halt at any possible time. It’s disappointing to think about all the things we have to miss out on, or change how they are originally are supposed to be. I have two older siblings and I remember them experiencing their senior year, and I must say I envy them for having a normal one. I hate that it is my last year to experience high school with the class of 2021, as well as my friends in the younger classes. It’s like the hallways are bare and my classes are not very full, because few of us choose to be an in person learner. Then again, nothing in the world is normal right now, and that is just how it has to be. I’m very hopeful things will get better before I walk the halls of SHS one last time. I’m very thankful for the Seminole High School staff I know how hard they are working to make things as normal as possible and as safe as possible. My advice to my fellow classmates, enjoy it all and do not take anything for granted because as COVID-19 has shown us, your world can be flipped upside down in a hurry. I do feel like the class of 2021 is suffering in more ways than just in the different high school atmosphere. The way in which we will determine our next steps in life is different. Many colleges and businesses don’t have the funds for the scholarships they once could give, so this may be a determining factor if some of us can attend our dream school or not. I’m not writing this article for pity though, I’m just trying to explain to you that even though this year so far isn’t the greatest we must make the most of it! We must let the school spirit live on, and continue to make high school as fun as high school once used to be. We must be responsible for making this OUR YEAR regardless of Covid-19 setbacks.
Read moreSometimes people need a change. It’s healthy to find a routine and stick to it, however, that routine can become unhealthy. It takes a certain toll on the human mind. When you find that rut, that incessant way of doing things it’s easy to forget why you decided to create the path you did. Sometimes, you need to step back and see the bigger picture. You need to escape.
